Alright, this one might be a bit contentious.
I use Akismet, but it is not perfect. It lets a lot of stuff through, so I make a couple of adjustments to block the rest of the spam.
Namely, I block a list of most typical words and letters that are in spam comments. Below, I’ll share my list and how to apply it.
How to block Akismet-fooling spam (for non-Russian blogs)?
- Navigate to Settings > Discussion
First you need to find the WordPress’ built-in blockword list. IT’s under Settings > Discussion
- Enter the following list of trash in the “Disallowed comment keys”
I don’t want to make things more complicated than I need to. This list has blocked practically all of the automated spam that Akismet doesn’t notice:
Obviously, if your blog is about pharmaceutical products, or you expect your commenters to write in French or Russian, this won’t work. But you’re smart enough to remove the terms you don’t want in there.
- Save and enjoy far less spam!
Hit “Save” and adjust later if necessary!
Track any comments that might come through, and block them.
